June 8, 2011 - PRLog -- ADVENTURE-HUNGRY TEAMS INVITED TO SIGN UP FOR WILDHEARTS WOLFTREK CHALLENGE

Adventurers from across the UK and beyond keen to ‘wolf down’ a spectacular charitable challenge are being urged to sign up for the WildHearts WolfTrek taking place in the Scottish Highlands on August 6th and 7th.  Participants will have just 24 hours to complete a stunning 45 mile route from Forres to Cairngorm Mountain, with the added thrill of crossing the remote Dava Moor, home to the infamous ‘Wolf of Badenoch’, under the cover of night.

Created by the WildHearts charity, the WolfTrek route has been designed to take participants through a microcosm of Highland wilderness, packed with diverse terrain, landscapes and wildlife.  Hiking from sea level to the heart of the Cairngorm National Park, the ‘WolfPack’ will set off from Forres on the Moray Coast and venture along the tranquil Dava Way, through the ancient pine forests of Abernethy and Glenmore, past sparkling Lochindorb and through the breath-taking valleys and passes of the Cairngorms.  Uniquely, participants will also cross the Dava Moor by night, passing the spooky ruined castle of the medieval tyrant Alexander Stewart the Earl of Buchan, known as the ‘Wolf of Badenoch’.  The ‘Wolf’ became infamous in the 14th century after torching Elgin cathedral and destroying the town of Forres. The final stage of the trek will see participants tackle the twisting trail up Cairngorm Mountain to conclude the experience with a roaring reception at its ski station, which features one of the UK’s highest bar and boasts incredible views over the alpine valley below.

The WolfTrek has been devised to be as inclusive as possible, with a number of options available for teams to complete the route. Whilst the most adventurous will have the opportunity to tackle the whole 45 mile trek, the challenge has also been broken down into three, 15 mile stages, which can be tackled as a team relay effort.  There is also an option to sample a “bite-sized” 17 mile version of the trek by completing the Midnight March, from Forres to the shores of ghostly Lochindorb.

This August’s event is the fourth consecutive WolfTrek, which annually sees teams from across the UK and beyond taking part, boosted by a strong local contingent.  Nearly 200 participants have registered so far, including teams from the USA, Egypt, Jordan and Belgium.  WildHearts founder and event organiser Mick Jackson is urging interested parties to sign up for the event now:

“The WolfTrek is a fantastic opportunity to have an adventure and explore the spectacular wilderness that Scotland has to offer.  It took us months to create the route as it does not exist on any map. Moreover the WolfTrek can only take place one weekend a year due to the unique conservational sensitivities of the area.  Teams from around the world travel to the Highlands to take part and we’re so proud to be able to show off this wonderful area we call home. There is still time to sign up for this years event but I would urge anyone interested to register now.”

WildHearts provide micro-loans and business training to people living in poverty in the developing world – including Ghana, Bolivia and Peru - enabling them to work their own way out of poverty.  Once one WildHearts micro-client repays their loan, that money is then lent out to another member of their community.  In this way funds raised by the WolfTrek will be re-lent for years to come, with participants continuing to help more people work their way out of poverty every year.
