June 8, 2011 - PRLog -- dieselCoco oil Biodiesel is the Better alternative for diesel engines

Bio fuels are transport or gas fuel derived from renewable natural sources. By renewable, it means that they are easily replaced when used unlike fossil fuels that will take a million years to form. Examples of renewable resources are plants, vegetable oils, and industrial wastes.
According to studies, using bio fuels to run engines has countless advantages most especially on the environment. Surprisingly, coconut oil which is known to be useful as cooking oil, dietary supplement, and cosmetic ingredient can also be made into bio fuel.

Coconut bio fuel may offer more advantages:

1. Cheaper

Bio diesel coconut oil and bio fuel coco oil can be the cheaper choice especially for the locals of the tropics. They would not have to import diesel as they could already produce fuel for running engines, generators, and mills. Or, if they would still have to buy diesel from outside sources, mixing coco oil to use the diesel cuts the cost at significant amount.

2. Accessible

Aside from being cheap, rural areas have easier access to coconut oil bio fuel. They would not have more difficulty in finding sources of energy or fuel to generate electricity when price of oil gets too high.

3. Renewable

When coconuts are used, it is considerably easy to replace them. Coconut trees can grow in almost any kind of soil even in sandy soils in seashores. More so, they live and bear fruit for up to more than sixty years. It is considered a "three-generation tree" which can support a farmer, his children and his grandchildren.

4. Sustainable

As said, bio fuels do not give out excessive CO2 that could harm the environment. Bio fuel coconut oil has a neutral effect on the CO2 deposits in the atmosphere. More so, the smoke it emits does not irritate the nose, some say it even smells sweet.
5. A plus for farmers

A rise in the demand of coconut from the market greatly helps the native farmers in tropical countries. More jobs for them mean more income. Consequently, a boom in the coconut industry is helpful to the local economy.

The Coconut Crop

The coconut crop is ideal as a second-generation biodiesel feedstock.

The coconut crop is fast-growing, typically can be harvested within 3 years of planting, and can bear fruit continuously for more than 60 years. The crop can flourish even when grown in poor-quality soil and marginal land normally unfit for conventional agricultural uses.
Due to efficient land use the growth of coconuts does not compete with valuable food production, thereby making it a sustainable fuel feedstock. In addition, it is carbon-neutral as it is not derived from fossil fuels.

Compared with other energy crops, the coconut crop has a significantly higher oil output. 4,420 liters of coconut oil can be produced per hectare per year, compared with 1,122 Ltrs /hectare for rapeseed and 467 Ltrs /hectare for soybean.

The coconut biodiesel product also offers better performance, ease of refining, and better fuel economy than that derived from many other types of energy crops. Coconut oil comes very close to diesel fuel in its smooth combustion behavior, can act as an ignition improver when blending with conventional petro diesel, and produces the least No emissions amongst a large group of crop-derived oils, according to an EC project.

(Reuters) - Pacific Bio-Fields Holdings Plc said it has received approval to use 400,000 hectares of land to plant coconut trees in the Philippines to make alternative auto fuel, which it aims to sell to Japanese users in five years.

Markets

The biodiesel market is expanding rapidly around the world, supported by the need for solutions to ensure fuel security and combat climate change. In 2008, a total of 11.8 billion liter of biodiesel was consumed. The biodiesel market is growing especially fast in the EU, Australia, US, Canada, Brazil, and Asia. Worldwide demand for biodiesel will grow to 45 million tons by 2010, with bio fuels set to go main stream with global capacity growing at 20% per annum by 2010.1
The current bio fuels market size for BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) countries stands at around US$570 million and is increasing at 60% per annum, and global demand for diesel fuel currently exceeds 200 billion gallons annually.²

Coconut biodiesel is the liquid fuel consisting of methyl ester processed and refined from the raw natural oil from the coconut flesh. It can be used alone or blended with conventional petro diesel in unmodified diesel engines for powering vehicles and jet planes.

Animal feed

Copra meal cake is the by-product dried from the residual kernel, or flesh, of the coconut. It is high in fat and protein and is commonly sold as animal fodder when mixed with other feed ingredients.

Activated carbon

The coconut shell provides material for activated carbon bio-cokes, or activated carbon. Activated carbon has a very large surface area and high micro-porosity, making it suitable for a range of environmental and industrial applications, including water filtration, air purification, groundwater remediation, and sewage treatment.

High-quality bio-diesel

Coconut biodiesel is categorized as the "highest-quality alternative diesel fuel" (Austrian Bio-Fuels Institute, March 2007). Vegetable oil-derived biodiesels are considered as carbon-neutral as they are not fossil-derived, having already absorbed CO2 through photosynthesis. In addition, minimal nitrogenous substances are generated and accordingly coconut biodiesel is a very clean alternative fuel.

Cultural Management

Ecological Requirements

When the proper site for coconut plantation establishment has been identified, the amount of work in land preparation will depend on the nature of the land to be opened. Recommended land preparation practices should be carried out to allow optimum planting and subsequent application of treatments in the field.

Land Preparation

Like other crops, coconut cannot be established in thick vegetation. Clearing of debris from thick vegetation is primarily necessary to eliminate possible breeding sites for the destructive rhinoceros beetle. Hence, the area should be cleared of felled trees/shrubs, stumps, weeds, and other obstruction and then plowed and harrowed to improve soil .

Access Roads and Surface Drainage

Access roads are needed in delivering seedlings and supplies, and later, in hauling the produce to and from the farm. These facilitate inspection, data gathering and evaluation of palms. Surface drainage is essential to avoid water logging.

Hole Preparation

Prior to digging, plating guides are put in place by using 2 pegs placed at equal distances from the stake. This indicates the center of the hole where the sprout of the seedling to be planted later on will have to be aligned. It must be noted that by using a stick marked at the center, and using the planting guides at planting time, the relocation of the stake in the hole can easily be done. Holes should be dug at 50x50cm size. This operation commences as early as 2 months before planting to allow for weathering of the soil on the sides and bottom of the holes. Weathering is encouraged to promote early root contact.
