June 8, 2011 - PRLog -- Whilst companies offering help with personal injury claims have become increasingly present within society over recent years, new research has revealed that just under half of victims of personal injury do not claim compensation. What’s more, the research revealed that the majority of those who did not claim suffered their injury at work.

The study was conducted by www.personalinjurylawyers.co.uk as part of research into how the British public have handled accident and personal injury claims in the past, should they have fallen victim. 1,211 men and women aged 21 and over subsequently took part, answering questions surrounding their experience.

Respondents were initially asked, “Have you ever been the victim of an accident, for which you could have claimed compensation?” to which 39% answered “yes.” These respondents were then asked if they had sought to claim compensation for their injuries, to which just under half, 48%, answered “no.”

The respondents who did not claim compensation for their injuries were asked what type of accident they had suffered. The top three results were as follows:
1) Accident at Work – 36%
2) Car Accident- 25%
3) Slip/ Trip – 22%

The majority, 52%, of those who did not claim compensation for their injuries explained that they simply ‘didn’t know how to do so;’ whilst a quarter, 23%, were concerned about finding a ‘reputable firm’ to deal with their claim. Just under a fifth, 18%, feared that they would not win their case.

Furthermore, two thirds, 64%, of those who had not claimed compensation for their personal injury explained that they had taken time off work due to their injuries.

Nicholas Tate, founder of personalinjurylawyers.co.uk, commented on the findings:

“It was interesting to see that so many people do not claim after being the victim of personal injury, particularly given common belief we live in somewhat of a ‘blame’ culture. Of course, claiming compensation in no way translates as blame, and people should remember that compensation claims should be made as a means of recompensing financial or physical damages caused by the accident in question.”

He continued:

“Many people will fall victim to accidents or some aspect of personal injury in their lives, through no fault of their own. However, claimants should be careful to choose solicitors to deal with their claim with the correct accreditations, and not fall into the traps of many compensation companies currently on the market. Always seek to find a proper, registered solicitor with experience in personal injury; that way, you know your claim will be dealt with in the best possible manner.”
