June 6, 2011 - PRLog -- Los Angeles, CA – The 2011 California Maritime Leadership Symposium (CMLS), held May 11th and 12th in Sacramento, attracted an audience of high-level maritime executives as well as state and federal policymakers.  With key members from both the California State Legislature and representatives from California’s ports in attendance, the 2011 Symposium encouraged productive dialog among maritime industry leaders and effectively communicated port needs to California decision makers.

Organized by a coalition including the California Association of Port Authorities (CAPA), California Marine Affairs and Navigation Conference (CMANC), California Marine & Intermodal Transportation System Advisory Council (CALMITSAC), the Harbor Association of Industry and Commerce, the Propeller Club of Los Angeles/Long Beach and the California Maritime Academy, this year’s event marked the 11th anniversary of successfully bringing together trade and transportation organizations with close ties to California’s vital maritime industry. Expert panelists covered a range of issues including federal freight policy, clean technologies, maritime workforce development, and environmental policies surrounding the maritime industry.

As the symposium’s venue was strategically located in proximity to the Capitol building, many members of the California State Legislature were in attendance. Senator Alan Lowenthal, Assemblymember Wesley Chesbro, Assemblymember Nancy Skinner and Assemblymember Bonnie Lowenthal were also featured as speakers at the 11th annual event.

Attracting attendees and passerbys alike, this year’s symposium hosted the The Port of Los Angeles’  mobile educational display called the TransPORTer. The TransPORTer allowed attendees to try out a number of interactive exhibits, including a crane operator simulation. An additional highlight was the symposium’s well-attended “Evening Reception” held in the beautiful Capitol Rotunda. During the reception, Senator Alan Lowenthal presented the Port of Long Beach with the Senate Proclamation in recognition of its centennial celebration.

For a second year in a row, the California Maritime Leadership Symposium addressed the environmental impact of the symposium and worked with Three Squares Inc. to reduce the impact of the event. Three Squares Inc.
