Follow on Google News | A VOICE for the invisible workforceThe Australian Association for Virtual Industry Professionals Ltd has been launched in response to the rapid growth of the Virtual Industry in Australia and the need for a representative body that serves our unique Australian interests.
By: Ingrid Bayer Considered to be one of the world’s fastest growing industries and harnessing the developments in communication and IT, the Virtual Industry has started to make its mark in Australia. There are over 585,000 home-based businesses in Australia with many offering their services over the internet and remotely, yet this sector of the Australian economy has largely been ignored in the recent budget presented by Treasurer Wayne Swan. Abolishing the entrepreneur incentive scheme and the tax incentives for housewives means that the budget offers nothing for this growing sector of the economy. Replacing these benefits with a deduction against assets such as a “car” offset is ludicrous given the lack of mobility of this sector. The majority of virtual businesses are owned by women including those unable to commit to a regular job for reasons of access, family or health. They are tertiary qualified with at least 5 years industry experience. They have taken matters into their own hands and created an industry that meets an immediate need and is self-sufficient. It is time that the Government recognised this sector as it has the potential to help the government meet its targets in regards to workforce participation. Ingrid Bayer, Executive Officer of AAVIP says, ‘Location becomes a moot point when providing your services virtually. I am located in a small country town in New South Wales, yet I am able to deliver my services and expertise to clients located all over Australia, and indeed worldwide. The options are endless and it has taken me off the traditional employment treadmill where, especially in regional areas, choices and financial rewards are very, very limited’ AAVIPs mission is to represent the Virtual Industry on a local, state and national level, and to promote and educate the Australian business sector about the benefits the industry has to offer them - especially given the current economic climate. Another key focus for AAVIP will be to develop relevant and appropriate quality standards for the Australian Virtual Industry. ‘Developing industry standards will become a major focus in the future as it is evident that there are no Australian standards that are relevant or applicable to the unique Australian Virtual Industry as a whole. Up until now the only standards are US regulated and not totally suited to our local industry’ said Liz Parker, President of AAVIP. Executive Officer of AAVIP, Ingrid Bayer, said “We call on the government to recognise our Association as a strong voice of the virtual business sector and to confer with us on how to utilise our cutting edge technology and skills to help with the skills shortage that is happening now and well into our future.
