Follow on Google News | SD Flash of San Diego Blow Away Santa Ana WindsIn a clash of the top two teams of the Southwestern Division of the NPSL on June 4th, the SD Flash (7-2-0) beat the Santa Ana Winds (7-2-0) to move into a tie for first place.
By: San Diego Soccer Partners, Inc. As was to be expected in a game for first place in the division, both teams tried to establish themselves in the midfield, with several strong challenges coming in from both sides. Eventually, the referee deemed a particularly tough challenge from Nelson Pizarro, worthy of a caution. Flash continued to dominated the possession stats building slowly through the midfield, attempting to exploit the speed of from former USD standout Ryan Guy down the left side of the field. Guy, recently returned from a successful career in Europe, brought an additional dimension to the team, providing a veteran presence to an already potent attacking line. In the 29th minute, the Flash doubled their lead as Brennan Tennelle, headed home a cross for his first goal of the season. Flash continued to challenge and nearly had a third from Guy as he tore down the left side and shot to the far post, the ball just trickling past the wrong side. In the second half, Santa Ana started to establish themselves, with a couple of shots that tested Justin Myers’ in goal. With the mid-day temperatures in the 80s, players on both sides started to signs of being affected by the hot summer day. As the hour mark of the game approached, the Winds started to commit more resources into attack and started to create chances. Santa Ana forward Julio Madrigal was put through by a quality diagonal ball from the midfield and looked clearly frustrated when he shanked his shot wide to the right failing to force a save from the Flash shot stopper. As is often the case when more players are committed forward, the Flash used the space for a classic counter opportunity. Emeanua collected the ball from a clearance with his back to goal 40 yards from goal and found a streaking Tennelle who broke through the remaining defenders at speed and calmly slotted the ball past the Winds keeper for his second goal of the game and a 3-0 lead in the 63rd minute. The Flash settled into a defensive formation to help preserve Myers’s shutout efforts continuing to cause problems on the counter attack committing numbers forward quickly as attacking opportunities arose. In the 72nd minute, good work on the right flank by Brian Lewis saw him pull the ball back to the top of the box where David Bakal’s shot was blocked, but Ladule LoSarah looked almost surprised as the ball fell to his feet as he easily stroked the fourth Flash goal into the back of the net. Coach Warren Barton commented, “We were magnificent today. Going forward, defending, everything we did was quality and the score reflected it. We got off to a great start, and we kept the level high for all the game. No disrespect to the Winds, but we made a very good team look average today”. The Flash’s next home match is on June 19th to where they face the Santa Ana Winds again, a game expected to decide who will finish in first place in the division.
