The leading Ethiopian news story of the week revolved around the pardon given to 23 Derg officials on the eve of the 20th anniversary downfall of the 17-year-long Derg rule. The Ethiopian Government surprised everyone by declaring national pardon to associates of former Marxist dictator Mengistu Hailemariam, who had been sentenced to death for committing genocide during the 1970s "Red Terror" campaign. Ethiopian President Girma Woldegiorgis declared the national pardon at the National Palace.
Also in the news was the IMF forecast of plummeted economic growth for the next fiscal for Ethiopia. Contrary to the Ethiopian Government’s prediction of 11.4 percent growth, the IMF forecasts 7.5 percent for 2011-2012. The IMF report blames unfriendly business environment, restrictions on private lending, and exceedingly high inflation.
Another important piece of Ethiopian news that made headlines in the country was about Ethiopia’s reported offer of volunteering to send peacekeepers to the disputed region of Abyei, Sudan, amid fears of a civil war between north and south Sudan. While south Sudan has accepted Ethiopian offer of intervention, north Sudan is still considering the offer.
