On the Saturday morning of 5-7-11, the city of Virden hosted a 5K Walk/Run Event which also included a 1-mile Fun Walk/Run. This fundraising event began and ended at the North Mac North Campus Elementary School (ie, Virden Elementary School).
Event Sponsors were: Get Healthier Macoupin, Austin Family Chiropractic, Linda Worlow's State Farm Insurance Agency, Premiere Physical Therapy, the Virden Area Association of Commerce and Cherry's IGA.
Event organizers were: Jennifer Hopper who represents both the Get Healthier Macoupin foundation and the Macoupin County Public Health Department; current Virden Area Association of Commerce president Linda Worlow from State Farm, chamber member Kyle Johnson from Premiere Physical Therapy and past president and current chamber member Dr. Todd Austin from Austin Family Chiropractic.
The Virden walk/run event, which had an official slogan of "Panting For The Pantries", had 107 participants. In all, a grand total of $1,045 was raised for the Virden food pantries. Many participants were from the cities of Virden and Girard, while some walkers and runners came from as far away as Benld, Granite City, Greenfield, Roodhouse and Springfield. Many other volunteers also assisted in assuring that this event was a success.
On Friday June 3, 2011, members of the 5K event committee met with representatives of both of Virden's food pantries for the official check presentations at Austin Family Chiropractic.
Each food pantry received one half of the amount raised, or $522.50. Verna Scharfenberg represented the Virden Community Food Pantry, while Melanie Bozso represented the Grace Southern Baptist Church's "Grace Place" Food Pantry.
