The idea of a Debate Club was generated by parents of students attending private schools in the Washington, DC metropolitan area who were seeking a forum to encourage open discussion of critical national and global issues in a spirit of cooperation and tolerance, but in the county in which they live. “We are delighted to be able to respond responsibly and substantively to parents with the educational value that is gained through learning how to argue appropriately,"
Debate topics will flow from issues that directly or indirectly impact students’ lives and will be designed to intensely engage students in developing clarity of thought; research and analytical skills; depth of reading and comprehension;
Holmes Grant, a former Constitutional Law Debate Coach at Legal Outreach in New York City while at Columbia Law, and two Columbia Law colleagues, including a National Moot Court Competition and National Debate Champion, will provide leadership for articulation and development of debate standards for the Club as well as monitor and assess the development of individual debaters.
