LOCAL HISTORY GETS FICTIONAL WORK-UP FROM U.K. AUTHOR

A century-old unsolved crime in New Mexico, U.S.A, gets a new spin this week when British author Philip Corbett publishes his novel ‘White Sands’, based on the disappearance of Albert and Henry Jennings Fountain in 1896.

The disappearance of prominent attorney Fountain and his eight-year-old son in February of 1896 sent repercussions throughout the territory at the time, and remains one of New Mexico’s most notorious unsolved crimes.

Author Philip Corbett says he stumbled upon the details of the crime as he researched the life story of Pat Garrett, while looking for material for a new book.

“The story grabbed me and I knew immediately it was something that I wanted to write about. Thankfully, the case is very widely documented, so researching was relatively straightforward to do, even from the heart of the United Kingdom.”

“True crimes are, by their nature, a little restrictive, granting the author very little creative licence. The Fountain’s disappearance is the back-story of my novel, and I then created a fictional spin off based around the facts, the people, the places and the era.”

The story itself is set in 1903, seven years after the Fountain’s disappearance, around the premise that young Henry Jennings Fountain was not murdered, but survived his father and lived on, raised by others.

“I am definitely not looking to shed any new light on the Fountain’s disappearance, but I have tried to be as sympathetic as possible to the characters involved. Many of the circumstances surrounding their disappearance have been reproduced faithfully within the story itself, and outside of that story, I have drawn heavily on concurrent events, places and people.”

“White Sands” by Philip Corbett is available as e-book only, on Kindle at www.amazon.com and all other formats at www.smashwords.com, priced at $0.99.
