“It was very lucky I spotted it. The top of the jug was fairly black, resembling pewter, but following a good clean it revealed a detailed silver patterning overlaid on amethyst-tinted glass. A real gem,” Derek said.
The claret jug went under the hammer yesterday in Sevenoaks. It was expected to fetch more than £1,000, but interest from collectors, dealers and the general public pushed the price up to £1,500.
Another lot, found in the same house as the claret jug, that created interest was a collection of war medals with an interesting provenance. They belonged to Private W A McBain who was sadly killed on the first day of the Battle of Somme in July 1916. The medals sold for £400.
The next sale takes place at the auction rooms in Argyll Road on 22nd June.
