June 1, 2011 - PRLog -- Dual language children’s publisher Diglot Books has come up with the perfect way to introduce your child to a second language. Their range of bilingual books and flash cards complete with free online audio impressed hundreds of visitors at the Baby Show at the NEC last weekend.

Diglot Books launched their latest story book “Matthew and The Wellington Boots” at the show and author Esmee Carré, who is studying to become a Primary School Student at Winchester University, made a surprise appearance to receive her first copy of the book and talk to parents about her inspiration.  Esmee, is a resident of Guernsey; known for its multi-culturalism due to its proximity to France. She said “it is a fabulous idea and I have bought the full range of books to use in my teacher training.”

Alison O’Dornan founder of Diglot Books says “We’ve had amazing feedback from families who all seemed extremely keen to give their children a head start at school by teaching them a second language early. By far the most popular language at the show was Spanish, with parents inspired by the idea of their children being able to converse whilst on holiday. ”
“We were particularly encouraged by the number of younger parents, who remembered struggling to learn French at secondary school and wanted to give their child a boost by introducing a second language early, whilst brain connections are still forming and the knowledge can stay with them for life.”

“Children really enjoy learning to speak another language, and we believe that the earlier a child is exposed to a foreign language, the more easily the language is acquired. The ability to hear different phonetic pronunciations is sharpest before the age of 3. It is also a fantastic opportunity for parents to get involved and learn at the same time.”
Recent studies have found that toddlers who learn a second language have a cognitive edge over those who wait until secondary school French class.  Bilingual children frequently out score their monolingual counterparts in “executive functioning” which for toddlers is mainly sorting shapes, but for adults represents important mental tasks such as planning, organisation and goal setting.
