May 31, 2011 - PRLog -- While natural gas companies are establishing more local offices, most of the corporate world still remains in Texas, Oklahoma or other areas outside of Pennsylvania. This can present an interesting challenge for local businesses seeking to do business with the natural gas industry.
Joe Barone, President, PA Gas Directory LLC, will present his “Five Steps to Success in the Marcellus Shale”, a guide for local businesses to follow. Barone gave this presentation last March at an expo for McKean, Potter and Cameron counties and will be doing so again, on June 28 at the Oil Regional Alliance Business to Business Expo in Oil City, PA.
The goal of the Five Steps is to get businesses thinking outside of the box. In order to compete in the 24/7 natural gas industry, using older business methods won’t always work out and local businesses have to be able to extend beyond their comfort zones. That’s step number one. Businesses also need to be sure that they are using technology to their advantage. Most of the employees of these companies are using laptops and smart phones to get their information and a company has to be cognizant of this to succeed.
Barone commented, “This industry moves so quickly and managers are constantly coming in and out of Pennsylvania. Without a disciplined approach, the likelihood of success is diminished.”  He added, “As we have observed local companies and spoken with gas workers, we feel we’re getting a handle on the some of the approaches that can work.”
While most of the contact between the industry and businesses will be electronic, that doesn’t mean that face to face discussion, and a little schmoozing, isn’t important.
“A business needs to get out to the many expos and other industry events,” said Barone.  “It helps immensely to visit the places where gas workers hang out, places like the bars at the hotels, sports bars, convenient stores early in the morning and around lunch.  Anywhere one sees a bunch of white pickup trucks with out-of-state plates is good place to do a little schmoozing.”
