New Local Book Compared Asbury Park's Past to its Present

Local author compliles pictorial history of Asbury Park and Neptune

May 31, 2011 - PRLog -- The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s Then & Now series is Asbury Park and Neptune from local author Robert Gillinsky. The book boasts more than 200 vintage and modern photographs chronicling the growth of these two communities.

Asbury Park and Neptune, once popular Victorian seaside retreats, played an important role in the rebirth of rock and roll in the 1970s. In Asbury Park and Neptune, photographs document the changes to these communities, as well as the hamlets and boroughs that are currently or were formerly a part of Neptune, including Ocean Grove, Neptune City, Bradley Beach, and Avon-by-the-Sea.

Gillinsky says, “Although things change so much, some portions of the backdrop of our treasured memories still exist as they were, and hopefully will provide the settings for our children’s precious memories as well.” He has been chronicling the area’s history for the past 20 years.

Highlights of Asbury Park and Neptune:
•   Author was granted access to the legendary Upstage club, which had been shuttered in 1971, and is very rarely accessible to the public through any means. This is where Springsteen got his start.
•   Vini “Mad Dog” Lopez, original E Street Band drummer provided access to his personal collection of photos.
•   Photographs from every decade reaching back to the 1870s have been included in the book.
