PRLog - May 31, 2011 - A jewelry marketer by day, at night, Carrie King’s side business is making the portable toilet a friendlier place for women.  Motivated by a personal experience, she founded the company Aglow Systems and has developed a solar light for port-a-potties.  She named her patented invention the Firefly.

“Port-a-potties serve a great purpose. But let’s be honest, women don’t like using them, especially in the dark,” Carrie explains.  “It’s really not as big of a deal to men.  But for ladies, we want to see what we’re doing and touching in there!  It’s a product women will understand.”

The idea was inspired in 2008 when she attended a 4-day, outdoor, music festival with husband, Chris King.  According to Carrie, “I was complaining about using the port-a-potties at night when we started questioning why they didn’t have lights.”  What began as a question, led to more serious conversation, and eventually turned into a two-and-a-half year project for the couple.

“We did our homework first, wanting to be sure it was something the industry would actually use, and we found out it was.”  Carrie adds that ‘offering lights in port-a-potties’ is an issue the industry had already been addressing, but had yet to find a great solution for; primarily because there are some innate challenges to lighting the portable structures.  “We listened to the customers’ needs, and through creative engineering, have met them.  We’re proud of it!”

To help cover some of the manufacturing costs, Carrie has launched a Kickstarter project.  “We’re a start-up, and it’s expensive to develop a new product.  Firefly is kind of unusual for Kickstarter projects, but thought I would give it a try.”  The project is collecting funds via kickstarter.com through June 18, 2011.  (Direct link to Kickstarter project, which includes an video explainer: http://kickstarter.com/projects/1060808756/firefly-solar-...)

Acknowledging she could likely manufacture her lights cheaper overseas, Carrie explains that supporting American industry is very important to Aglow Systems.  With the electronics sourced from around the US, Firefly Solar Lights are built in Knoxville, Tennessee, where the couple currently resides.
