As a Dryer Vent Cleaning service, we see it all the time. Homeowners with the foil type transitions connecting their dryers to the wall. While there is a label on the back of all dryers that strongly warns against the use of these types of transitions, most people just don’t read the back of the dryer. Hey, who can blame them? Not the first place you think of for good reading material.
There are three main problems with “slinky” foil type transitions:
1.They can become easily bent or crushed, seriously restricting your dryer’s airflow. Just like a lint clogged vent, this can result in longer drying times, excessive lint build up and the increased risk of a dryer fire.
2. The inside of these transitions aren’t smooth. They have ridges which will collect lint over time resulting in the problems mentioned above as well.
3. They have no fire resistant characteristics and will not be able to contain a fire if one occurs.
So what kind of transition should you use? That warning label also states that a metal or semi-rigid corrugated metal transition tube should be used. These types of metal transitions are fire resistant and will do a much better job of containing a fire.
Depending on your laundry room configuration, a solid metal transition may require some fabrication to get a good fit. The semi-rigid corrugated transition tube is much more flexible allowing it to be used in a wide range of configurations. Rotating elbows add to the versatility of this type of transition.
Also, if you plan on purchasing a new dryer and having it installed, insist on the semi-rigid corrugated metal transition tube being installed with your dryer. Several lawsuits have risen out of companies installing dryers with the foil type transitions.
