"Having spent over 50 years on this earth, not really knowing where God may be, yet intrinsicallly bound to the people of my birth, I have long wondered what it alll meant, and indeed if it meant anything at all. What was it ...to be Jewish?

And so I looked at life's staging posts - birth, death, marriage and Bar Mitzvah. I took a peek at Jewish humour, Israel, the Holocaust, and other peoples' vision of the archetypal Jew.

It has proved to be a life-changing experience discovering who I am, and you you may be. Even for those who try to get away and live a secular and Anglocized existence, there is frequenty something within that pulls them back. This Jewish community, either despite or because of adversity, has survived the years of atrocity and discrimination and the light of Jewish life burns bright.

I look at "frum" Jews with their peculiar garb, Reform Jews with their modernistic approach to Jewish ritual, and I ook at myself immersed in community, conditioning, cuture and ......tradition. I spurn it, I shrug my shoulders at its archaic rules, but I am part of it.  I watch the Sbabbos candles burn on a FRiday night and I am comforted by something I cannot propery describe."
