Ethiopian News Week in Review

The leading stories of the week were in relation to the 2nd India-Africa summit. Heads of states and delegations from various African countries congregated in Addis Ababa last week. India promised to boost investments in Africa and Ethiopia. The country offered Ethiopia USD 300 Million for railway project linking Addis Ababa with the Port of Djibouti. Many companies accompanied PM Singh on his visit to the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, showed considerable interest in various areas.

Also in the news was the United States Government launching a five-year $ 100 million dollar program to carry out a comprehensive and sustainable program for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) and their families mainly affected by HIV and AIDS in Ethiopia. According to press release from the US Embassy in Addis Ababa, the US government launched this program in the presence of government officials and press corps at Hilton Hotel in Addis Ababa.

Addis Ababa celebrated Ginbot 20 to mark the downfall of the Derg regime. As usual, the event received wide coverage in Ethiopia’s government-controlled media. PM Meles addressed modest gathering on that day and delivered a short address. The much publicized opposition demonstration against the government did not materialize, according to media reports.
