May 28, 2011 - PRLog -- A Victorian novel, which begins in 1830’s Baltimore, is the subject of A.V. Harrison Publishing’s attention this week.

“I realized that there was an absence of novels telling the story of Victorian-era Baltimore” explains Mary Wells Randall, author of The Jenkins of Baltimore. “My ancestors are from Baltimore, an exciting and vibrant city – both then and now.”

The Jenkins of Baltimore was written as an adaptation of the Civil War novel, Jenkins: Confederate Blockade Runner, which has sold nearly 300 copies during the five months of its soft cover distribution.  Both novels regale the Jenkins family, which at the turn of the last century was described by The Baltimore Sun, as “one of Baltimore’s most well-known” families.

Family members of the Confederate-leaning, Catholic family included James Ryder-Randall, Thomas Jenkins [whose land – it is speculated – was purchased to become the setting of the White House], Michael Jenkins, editor of The Catholic Review; and his wife and family historian, Mary Isabella Plowden Jenkins.

Mary Wells Randall’s research for The Jenkins of Baltimore is based on the findings of genealogist, Emily Hill, who has published a number of titles featuring the accomplished Jenkins family.

“The Jenkins’, whose roots trace back to Wales, built their 1800s wealth from the labors of tobacco farming.  Their largess expanded from their plantations to the shipping industry in the 1850s.  At that point the family included the Ryder-Randall families.”  James Ryder Randall, son of John and Mary (Ryder) Randall, great-grandson of William V. Jenkins is the author of “Maryland, My Maryland.”

The gentlemen of the Jenkins family, and their cousins, were known to have attended Georgetown University throughout the 1800’s.

The Jenkins of Baltimore features all of these characters, and many more, in its exploration of the drama surrounding the triumphs and tribulations of, indeed, one of Baltimore’s most well-known families.  An exciting read, no doubt, for genealogists, historians, and Civil War enthusiasts.
