Schafer Appointed to Library Development Position

South Bend—Nicholas T. (Nick) Schafer is the St. Joseph County Public Library’s new development coordinator, the library announced today. Currently the college fund director in the Office of Institutional Advancement & Marketing for St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana, Schafer will begin his duties with SJCPL on July 3, 2011.

A 2003 magna cum laude graduate of St. Joseph’s with dual degrees in communication and English literature, Schafer has been employed by his alma mater since July 2007, when he accepted the position of area director in the Office of Campus Life. One year later, he was promoted to his current position, where he has, among other things:
•   planned and executed of St. Joseph’s annual fund, including strategy development, direct mail, e-solicitation, face-to-face donor solicitation, stewardship, and donor recognition
•   solicited gifts and major gifts for capital projects
•   developed strategy for and managed a corps of volunteer solicitors
•   increased the alumni donor participation rate

Prior to his work at St. Joseph’s, Schafer served as environmental programs supervisor in the Office of Public Works in Elkhart, Indiana. He also spent two years working with AmeriCorps, first as a corps member, then as a team leader, both in Charleston, South Carolina.

Regarding his new position with SJCPL and his role in the community, Schafer says: “Lifelong learning has always been important to my family and the library system plays a vital role in that process. I am looking forward to joining the St. Joseph County Public Library staff in our efforts to continually grow the library. I plan to help secure this great resource for future generations to enjoy.”
