Recently released market study: Thailand Agribusiness Report Q3 2011

New Food and Beverage market report from Business Monitor International: "Thailand Agribusiness Report Q3 2011"

PRLog - May 26, 2011 - BMI View: Thailand's agricultural sector has been identified by the government as a priority for further development, due to the enormous contribution it makes to the country's trade balance. Compared to many countries in the region, Thailand's agricultural industry is fairly developed, thus meaning that inefficient storage and harvesting techniques are not major problems. However, the large number of small firms dominating the industry does inevitably lead to some overlap and a certain degree of inefficient resource allocation. We continue to factor strong growth from the rice, sugar and livestock industries which are highly export-oriented.

Key Forecasts

* Rice Production to 2014/15: 10.6% to 22.4mn tonnes. This expansion will come almost entirely from improved yields as the area of land under rice cultivation will remain stable.
 * Sugar Production to 2014/15: 42.6% to 10.1mn tonnes. This will be driven mainly by strong sugarcane yield improvements and improved sugar recovery.
 * Milk Consumption growth to 2015: 33.3%. According to FAO statistics, annual milk consumption in Thailand is 22kg/capita, significantly below the Asian average of 65.5kg/capita. This suggests there is still much more room to grow in developing milk consumption in the country.

Industry Developments

BMI does not think that recent reports of Thai pig farmers using the banned beta-agonist chemical agent in their meat products will significantly alter the consumption habits of Thai consumers. In April 2011, the livestock department reported cases of pig farmers from the Chon Buri province illegally using Betaagonist to increase the redness of pork, which is more appealing to consumers. However, given that the reports only implicate a few small-scale farmers, we do not think this will have a serious impact on overall pork consumption. According to the Livestock Department, perpetrators of the offense could be subject to a jail term of up to one year and/or a fine of THB10,000 (US$332).

Since October 2010, the Thai government has embarked on a plan to encourage farmers to grow rice only twice a year, instead of the usual three times. According to the state-run Thailand Rice Department, this should limit production of low-quality rice and increase the overall price of rice. The government hopes to boost rice productivity by 10% in two ways: Firstly, through reduced production costs as fertiliser and pesticide usage is decreased. Secondly, the spread of pests and diseases should be deterred as their lifecycles are disrupted by the change in planting seasons.

According to sugar analysts Swiss Sugar Brokers, up to 200,000 tonnes of raw sugar from Thailand are scheduled to be delivered to Russia and other Black Sea ports in April for the first time in eight years. This is a result of the abundant supplies in Thailand, causing the premium for Thai sugar to fall below that of Brazil, the world's largest producer of the sweetener, prompting BMI believes that these dynamics should add downward pressure to sugar prices over the coming months, assuming no disruption to production in Brazil or India.
