May 24, 2011 - PRLog -- Royal Palm Beach-The US Federal Trade Commission estimates that 9 million cases of identity theft take place per year in the USA   and recommends that individuals defend themselves against identity theft by shredding financial documents before disposal.

The Commission's identity theft statistics show that Florida had the highest per capita rate of reported ID theft, with Arizona and California following close behind. With the increased awareness of identity theft, it is important to dispose of records carefully.

Here are some stats that are sure to shake you up:
* One in ten American consumers is the victim of identity theft, and 1.6 million households have had their bank accounts/and or debit cards stolen.
* The average taken from each identity theft victim amounts to $4,841, and  the out-of-pocket cost to recover this money was between $851 to $1,378.
* About 50% of people learn their identities are stolen three months after the day of the crime.
*70% of Americans have trouble removing negative information stemming from the theft of their credit reports.

To help protect you from becoming a statistic, on Saturday morning, June 4th, from 10 am - 1 pm, The Palm Beach Chapter of the FSEA is hosting another Shred Fest. This is an incredible opportunity to protect yourself from identity theft by safely destroying your personal documents and papers in our shred truck...Right before your eyes.

This event will be held at 1070 E. Indiantown Rd Jupiter (parking lot of the America Plaza), and is FREE to anyone concerned about Identity theft and wants to dispose of personal and sensitive documents. Enrolled Agents will be on site to answer your tax document retention questions.
