MJHS, formerly known as Metropolitan Jewish Health System has teamed up with Joel M. Greenberg of Abrams Fensterman (http://www.abramslaw.com) to help raise funds in order to build a hospice that will treat adults with advanced illness and be the first of its kind in New York City to treat children.  On Thursday, May 12th the first annual “Reaching for the Stars” event took place at the Andaz Hotel in Wall Street to help MJHS achieve their goal of raising $1 million dollars.

Joel M. Greenberg and his wife Leslie have generously donated a large collection of celebrity autographs, letters and other memorabilia to MJHS which were collected by Joel’s brother-in-law, Howard “Kvetch” Shapiro during his struggle with AIDS in the 90’s.
The collection is going to be hung in the new wing, rightfully named the “Howard “Kvetch” Shapiro” wing at the new MJHS Hospice inpatient residence.  Greenberg states “We hope that the collection will be used to help and inspire others facing end of life.  When my wife and I became aware of the extraordinary programs and services of MJHS Hospice and Palliative Care, we decided to donate the collection to MJHS Foundation, to help them build this groundbreaking new hospice inpatient residence”.

The pioneering hospice will be able to accept children with terminal illness and will no longer be turned away and have to go through the process of checking into an emergency room in search of such care.

With 16 suites located on the ocean in Manhattan Beach, the new MJHS Hospice inpatient residence will be a home-like setting and provide for patients physically and psychologically, making it possible for families to stay with their loved ones comfortably and for as long as they wish.

Greenberg’s philanthropic efforts don’t stop here.  Mr. Greenberg serves on the board of UCPN (United Cerebal Palsy of Nassau County) in addition to being the former president of his Temple.
