May 24, 2011 - PRLog -- In Ken Keeley’s work, “Cover Stories 1997” (pictured above) the unknowing eye will only see a stack of current magazines and newspapers in a newspaper stand somewhere along the bustling streets of New York. Yet, when the artwork is viewed within the context of time, the most significant headline during that period unveils itself: this was the week of Princess Diana’s death and the rippling effects of her death made that year memorable for thousands of people around the world. Only an art piece like this can commemorate the event with such integrity and simplicity that having it on your wall automatically involves you in the narrative that of a real life princess who life is both inspirational and heartbreaking.

One of the notable magazines featured in the work is the much-collected “Farewell, Diana” issue of Newsweek in which the main story describes how Diana’s final ceremonial procession in London mirrored her life to the very minute detail such as what was on top of her coffin: “a bouquet of white tulips from Prince William and a wreath of white roses with a card bearing the handwritten word Mummy from Prince Harry.”

During the service inside Westminster Abbey, Prince William remained composed and even lent a crying shoulder to his brother, Prince Harry, who broke out in tears when Elton John rendered his performance. Fourteen years later, this Prince William takes a similar regal and pomp procession down through streets of London en route to the same abbey, only now, the ceremony is that of a celebration.

In the magazine article, the author concludes about the funeral precession, “We have some sense of what she was, but we will never know what she might have become.”  Fourteen years later, as the world watched another historical event take place publicly at the same location, we only have higher hopes that Prince William, the son of one of most important women in time, would somehow continue or even surpass her legacy. That hope may be the more apt conclusion to the life of Princess Diana.

This signed, limited edition artwork by Ken Keeley was featured in a couple of biographies written about the princess. Ken Keeley has mastered the intimate visual rendition of a large universal scene, in intimate detail and sustained with a certain emotion. Not quite a nostalgia, but an acknowledgement of how things were, how they are and how they be now. Click here to purchase the piece. Available at Baterbys for only a limited time.
