Product placement in the GUIOPERA is achieved when a brand or product is written into the story, which John Reyer refers to as Narrative Marketing. “The product is placed much like they do in the movies, only it’s more intimate in how the product hopefully becomes vital to the story,” says John Reyer, the designer of the GUIOPERA and “MAPP it.” John Reyer also creates the story, into which he has also written himself; this year he appears as the “Novice.”
MAPP it aims to make readers of the GUIOPERA just as passionate about the product as they are about the characters in the story.
“The first placement, Frost Maiden, is a difficult one in that it’s a book. So, essentially it’s the title that I’m placing. But I will use it as a device, which I already have a few ideas about,” says Afamasaga.
Asked whether it would’ve been easier to place brands like a cell phone or a car, and not a book, especially when he calls himself a novice, John Reyer replies that the book, “creates irony asap, just like that. Michelle is a fantastic writer, published and has won awards. I’m unpublished and only have the GUIOPERA, which is the only story I’ll write for a few years. I, a novice, have been trusted to push Michelle’s work.”
When Michelle Pillow was asked why she chose the GUIOPERA as a marketing channel for the release of Frost Maiden’s second digital edition, she responded, “I like trying new forms of marketing. And I like the uniqueness of textually placing a product. It’s a pretty fresh approach.”
According to John Reyer, this year’s undercurrent for the GUIOPERA, which runs from September 5 to December 25 and for which he’ll write a five day pilot as a teaser beginning on Tuesday May 31st, is Sustainability. “I’m bringing in John Lazoo as himself to replace Metofeaz in Part 2, but yes, I, or the Novice, who is a Novice at everything—he’
It appears that LMLA-ink, the crew Afamasaga works with, has decided to swap Lazoo’s illiteracy for the Novice’s foolish but humorous and wily ways in this year’s GUIOPERA.
Nevertheless, it will be most entertaining to watch the Novice attempt to place Frost Maiden by Michelle Pillow in this year’s GUIOPERA as a part of his brand-management label MobileAdApp, or MAPP it.
