May 23, 2011 - PRLog -- MEDFORD, Ore.--Cancer survivors, cancer patients, and their families are invited to celebrate Cancer Survivors Day and Family Night with Rogue Valley Medical Center staff at the Wild Rogue Pro Rodeo at the Jackson County Fairgrounds (Expo) on Thursday, June 2 at 6 p.m. A special event for children and pediatric cancer patients will also be held from 3:30 to 6 p.m.

Complimentary rodeo tickets for cancer survivors and patients are available at Rogue Valley Medical Center Cancer Services, please call 541-789-4263 for more information. At the fairgrounds there will be special “Family-Pack” pricing of four tickets for $36, with a large slice of Papa John's Pizza included with each family-pack ticket.

Rogue Valley Medical Center will sponsor a banner area of the Rodeo for all of its Cancer Survivor Day guests and will be recognizing cancer survivors and patients. All cancer survivors, cancer patients, their families and friends are invited. Together, they will show that life after a cancer diagnosis can be meaningful and productive.

The children's event will feature a rodeo clown, crafts, and games for kids, and free roping lessons.

“Surviving cancer is an attitude about life and living each day to the fullest,” says LeRae Bullard, supervisor, Radiation Oncology at RVMC. “You will find our Survivors Day event filled with joy, camaraderie, hope, compassion, and education as we honor cancer survivors and patients, their families and friends for their strength and courage.”

The national celebration of Cancer Survivors Day will be Sunday, June 5. Eleven  million survivors across America, will unite with caregivers, family members, friends, and healthcare professionals to celebrate.

Recent advances in cancer care have helped thousands survive. According to the NCSD Foundation, anyone living with a history of cancer, from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life, is a cancer survivor. In the United States, almost half of all men and one third of all women are expected to be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives. Learning about this disease is crucial, because many forms of cancer can be prevented and most cured if detected early.

But a cancer diagnosis can leave a host of problems in its wake. Physical, financial and emotional hardships often persist after diagnosis and treatment. Survivors may face many challenges such as hindered access to cancer specialists and promising new treatments, inadequate insurance, financial hardships, employment problems and psychological struggles. In light of these difficulties, our community needs to focus on improving the quality of life for cancer survivors.

“Despite the adversities, cancer survivors face each day with courage and dignity and serve as an inspiration to all of us,” says Bullard.
