May 23, 2011 - PRLog -- A new piece of health research suggests that the number one public health enemy in the U.S. for obesity may be the automobile. The facts show that perhaps, despite all the food cures, natural supplements, herbal remedies and alternative health therapies, the rise in our collective weight may not have been able to be stopped. But it can now that we recognize what has happened. Curb your addiction to driving around and you may start to see immediate dividends with your figure.

The surge in vehicle usage that began in the 1950s may be linked to surging obesity levels. Think of being overweight as an energy imbalance, the study says. When you eat, you burn off the energy in activities. But the car has become such a part of life that we don’t burn off the energy we used to. And we have an energy imbalance.

Researchers analyzed the relationship between obesity and vehicle use on a national scale. Looking at statistics between 1985 and 2007, they found that vehicle use correlated in the range of 99% with national obesity rates. In other words, the more we drive, the heavier we become.

When you sit in a car doing nothing, your body is burning the least amount of energy possible. Eating in your car? Even worse. Now our society is built around the car, so rather than walking or cycling, we drive and stay inactive. Obesity levels started to rise with the introduction of the car. Even now in places like China and India, obesity is on the rise just as automobiles are becoming greater factors in life.

The study says that, to eliminate obesity, each driver would have to reduce their driving by about 12 miles per day. That is not realistic, but here is what is: each driver reduces travel in a car by one mile a day. This, they say, would drop the obesity rate by 2.16%. That means nearly five million fewer adults would be classified as obese.

The key message here to take away is that if you can substitute a bicycle for a car a little every day, you will help reduce your own weight. And help the nation at the same time.
