By: Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce Donut Day was established in 1938 as a tribute to The Salvation Army “Lassies” who made and served donuts to thousands of soldiers during World War I beginning in 1917, The Salvation Army “Lassies” were the first women ever sent to the front lines during war time and they were sent to provide home cooked food and provide a morale boost to the troops. The donuts were cooked in oil inside the metal helmet of an American soldier. Join the Salavation Army, members of the NJ National Guard, World War II and Korean War veterans, as well as members from the Southern Ocean County Chamber business and tourism community from 11 am to 2pm in Chamber parking lot.
