West Sound Academy and Northwest College of Art this Summer: Art & Pottery Classes for Kids & Teens

May 20, 2011 - PRLog -- Children and teens in the North Kitsap area will have the opportunity to study visual art and pottery this summer under the guidance of a college art teacher, thanks to a collaboration between West Sound Academy and Northwest College of Art. Meredith Chernick, a Northwest College of Art instructor, will be teaching a visual arts class for 4th through 6th graders and two pottery classes at the college's pottery studio: a beginning class for children and a studio workshop for teens.

Meredith Chernick is a certified Art Specialist, with a degree in Art Education. Meredith has been an instructor at the Northwest College of Art since 1997, teaching a wide variety of both fine art and professional preparatory courses. Her own work includes sculpting and throwing in clay, printmaking, working with paper, and drawing in Silverpoint - the ideal medium for a perfectionist’s obsession with detail. Her silverpoint work can be seen at the Bainbridge Island Arts Gallery.

Meredith resides with her family and three dogs in Indianola, where she spends free time on the beach and volunteers her creative skills for community enrichment projects.  "I'm thrilled with this opportunity to work with children and teens this summer," says the artist and educator.

The Art Camp session will take place on the campus of West Sound Academy in the Frodel Hall art studio, while both pottery classes will be held in the pottery studio at the Northwest College of Art.  Classes that Meredith will be teaching include:

Pottery Camp - August 9-12, 9:00 a.m. to noon, for students entering 4th - 6th grades.  Students will receive guidance on hand‐building techniques while making projects that are useful and decorative.

Teen Pottery Studio - Monday evenings, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., weekly for five weeks from July 11 - August 8.  Open to all teens.  Students can get individual instruction and assistance on an individual project idea, or follow along on a guided project.
