As We Begin
Anesthesia is begun by placing a catheter in the vein for
anesthesia induction, fluids and pain medication.
Your pet is clipped and the skin is prepared for sterile surgery.
Your pet is then moved onto a warmed surgery table surface
and warmed intravenous fluids and pain medication are
administrated by a fluid pump or pump syringe depending
on the size of your pet.
During Surgery
Your pet is first connected to a respirator/anesthesia
machine and then to a computerized heart monitor
(EKG) and to a pulse oximeter (to measure oxygen levels
in the blood). Surgery is performed with sterile technique.
After surgery is completed, a trained technician observes
your pet on intravenous fluids and pain medication until they
are conscious and sitting up. At that time the intravenous
fluids are discontinued and injected pain medication
is given that will last 12 hours until oral medication is begun.
