St. Augustine Air Show Honors Our Veterans Memorial Day Weekend

A St. Johns County Tradition Returns to the Northeast Florida Regional Airport to Benefit U.S. Troops

May 20, 2011 - PRLog -- St. Augustine, Fla. –  After a five year hiatus, the St. Augustine Air Show returns to the Northeast Florida Regional Airport, Memorial Day Weekend, May 28 and 29, 2011 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a special salute to veterans. Proceeds from this year’s air show benefits: United Way of St. Johns County, the Wounded Warrior Project, the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, and Naval Special Warfare Foundation (Navy SEALS).  Northrop Grumman Corporation  is a major sponsor of the event.

“This year’s air show revives a tradition of vintage air shows that have been held annually at the Northeast Florida Regional Airport dating back to 1967,” said show organizer Craig Fordem. “This family-fun event promises to provide exciting entertainment for the whole family with performances by wing-walkers, perilous bi-plane stunts, flying comedy acts, and precision aerobatic teams, as well as an all-women’s parachute team, a fire-breathing monster called Robosaurus, an airplane versus jet engine powered truck race, and tactical demonstrations by a US Air Force F-16.”

Gates will open at 9:30 a.m. for parking on the in-field. Attendees will be able to tour the spectator area adjacent to the flight line and view aircraft on display. Between 1:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., pilots and their performing aircraft will take to the air to thrill the spectators with their expertise and flying skills. Gates will close at 5:00 p.m.

Some of the acts featured at this year’s show include: Misty Blues Skydiving Team, Gene Soucy and his Biplane “Showcat” , wingwalker Teresa Stokes, Kent Pietsch in his 1942 Interstate Cadet “Jelly Belly”, Heavy Metal Jet Team http://www.heavymetaljetteam.com , Kent Shockley and The ShockWave Jet Truck will race an airplane, The F-16 Fighting Falcon, and the car-eating Robosaurus http://www.robosaurus.com .
   
The flight line will also include the following aircrafts on display: Lockheed 12 (the plane flown by Amelia Earhart), WWII P-51 Mustang, DeHaviline Beaver, Hawkeye Hurricane, Cub “Legend”, Maule MXT-180A, Piper Warrior, Pitts, Stampe, Extra 300, Glider / Sailplane, Huskey Floatplane, Nanchung CJ-6 stunt plane, DeHaviline Chipmunk, St Johns County Sheriff’s Department Helicopter, Life Flight Helicopter and Civil Air Patrol.

Refreshments at the event’s concession stands will include a Taste of St. Augustine, featuring crab cakes, chowder, gourmet hot dogs, kettle corn, lemonade, Caribbean chicken skewers, charbroiled hamburgers and much more.
