First Book-Metro Atlanta Provides 1,950 New Books to Local Literacy Programs Serving Children

PRLog (Press Release) - May 19, 2011 - Atlanta, GA– May 20th, 2011  – First Book-Metro Atlanta announced today that 1,950 new books will be given to 3 literacy programs that serve Metro Atlanta children in need.  Programs include Communities in Schools, Gate City Day Nursery Association, and Scottdale Child Development & Family Resource Center, Inc.   Each child will receive one book every two months for a year, which enables the children to start their own home libraries they can share with their siblings and families. They will also receive a bookplate on which to place their names celebrating the importance of book ownership.

“The impact of First Book- Metro Atlanta grant for Scottdale Child Development Center program has been the opportunity to stress the importance of reading at school and home,” stated Barbara D. Clay, Center Director. “The grant has also assisted in building a stronger literacy component into our program with parental involvement.  The parents have expressed their appreciation of receiving a book a month for their child.”

Additional literacy programs in the Metro Atlanta area have received First Book grants..  First Book-Metro Atlanta is part of First Book’s national network of volunteer-led Advisory Boards who provide new books to children in need in communities across the country.
