May 19, 2011 - PRLog -- RISING YOUNG GOLFERS DEMONSTRATE WALSALL GOLF CLUB’S PEDIGREE

Senior figures at Walsall Golf Club are convinced international honours will soon be coming to the West Midlands, thanks to two of their young players.

Freddie Sheridan-Mills, aged 18, and Joe Bland, 20, came through the junior and intermediate ranks at the Broadway club, and are now aiming to take on Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer and Luke Donald at the major events in the next few years.

Joe has recently joined the PGA EuroPro professional tour, leaving behind the challenge of taking on several other similarly talented youngsters in the club’s strong junior section.

And Freddie is making a name for himself in amateur competition, and looking to follow in Joe’s footsteps in the near future.

Resident pro Richard Lambert, who himself took on greats like Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player at the British Open in 1973, believes they can now go from strength to strength.

He said: “I’ve been here for 28 years and it has always been a very friendly club which looks after all members, but the support and advice for our young players is second to none.

“It plays a huge part in helping the likes of Freddie and Joe develop into outstanding golfers who may challenge for honours over the next few years.

“And we have a long list of other young players ready to follow in their footsteps, such as David Mercurio, Lewis Pearce and George Dukes, who all play off a handicap of two or lower.”

The first challenge for Joe, who still holds the course record of 63 (set in 2008), is to perform on the PGA EuroPro Tour, and emulate previous winners like Ross Fisher and Richard Finch.

He has full playing rights on the EuroPro tour, and will graduate to the challenge tour when he finishes high enough in the rankings.

Joe and Freddie want to qualify eventually for the full European Tour and will be aiming to do so at the qualifying school in September. Both have aspirations of playing one day in the four major championships.

Walsall Golf Club is now looking for more junior members to join and fill the gaps left by Freddie and Joe. Further information can be found at www.walsallgolfclub.co.uk.
