May 19, 2011 - PRLog -- On 16 May 2011, Phang Legal took part in Law Week by presenting at the Auburn City Council Library on the topic of Elders Law to a predominantly Chinese-speaking audience. Arranged by the Law Society and Auburn City Council, the presentation was intended to introduce members of the local Chinese-speaking community to the law in a friendly and relaxed environment.

Natalie Lim, a solicitor with Phang Legal (http://www.phanglegal.com.au), provided information on the importance of Wills, the differences between a General Power of Attorney and an Enduring Power of Attorney, and when an Enduring Guardianship would be required. More presentations are being planned for the future.

Ern Phang, the solicitor director of Phang Legal (http://www.phanglegal.com.au), commented "In a predominantly English speaking society, where the law is in English and the legislature and judiciary is still predominantly of Anglo-European heritage, non-English speaking parts of the community often struggle to understand the law and the legal system in Australia. Many within those communities also do not know or understand their legal rights, and some may even make assumptions regarding the law in Australia based on their experiences with the law in other countries (which often do not share the same respect for the rule of law).

I believe one of our roles and our responsibilities in the community as a small business and as a law firm is to break down these barriers. We share our knowledge and understanding of what the law is and what the law does, improve access to justice and competent legal services - either through our firm or through appropriately equipped government and non-government services.

We assist clients from all backgrounds, but because of our ethnic background and language skills of various proficiency there will always be a certain connection with the Chinese-speaking community. I am grateful to the Law Society and the Auburn City Council for organising the presentation, and as I have said before it has been a fantastic opportunity for Natalie, who is the newest and youngest member of our team to present in her professional capacity - hopefully being the first of many."
