PRLog - May 18, 2011 - PHILADELPHIA -- This annual festival was founded by Anthony “Tony” Williams, the legendary alto saxophonist who embodies “The Philadelphia Sound”. Tony Williams became a household name in the Philadelphia area in the 60's as he played in major jazz hot spots. He was the featured saxophonist in many bands. Tony’s unique sound can be found on many of the Philly International's hits with Billy Paul, MFSB, Blue Magic, Intruders, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes and the O'Jays.   Tony also was a part of the Bill Cosby band on his TV show. He and Bill Cosby have stayed very close throughout the years as Bill Cosby performs annually as a part of the Tony Williams Scholarship Jazz Festival with the Bill Cosby Reunion Band.

The mission of the festival is to “use Jazz as a vehicle for helping young people develop the kind of respectful attitudes, discipline, and leadership qualities that will enable them to become productive adults.  To foster the preservation of Jazz as an important American art form and to provide music skills, guidance and opportunities for students regardless of ethnic, culture, gender or family financial circumstances.

This year’s festival is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Donald Clark, past President of MACC, Inc., and Outstanding Educator and Dedicated Jazz supporter.  The Scholarship Festival will welcome world renowned headliners such as: Mike Boone, Walter Clark, Tommy Grice, Rob Henderson, Craig McIver, Dick Morgan, Barbara Morrison, Lee Smith, Ronnie Waters, Tony Williams, Phil Wright, and a Youth Ensemble. Special festival guests include Philadelphia's own Bill Cosby.

Additional events include a reception each night in the Atrium, a pool side jam, vendors, workshops, and so much more.   2011 Festival Honorees will be John Blake, Tyrone Brown, Tommy Campbell, Larry McKenna, Odean Pope and Curtis Warner.
Festival Weekend Packages, Day Passes and Individual Event Tickets are available. For more information, please contact MACC at (215) 753-0232 or (215) 438-8206. For more information on the Jazz Festival visit the Website at maccjazz.org.
