Regional Winner of Viral Video Contest Up For $10,000 In Scholarships

May 18, 2011 - PRLog -- Last fall, Alexis and Mark Breyer (Breyer Law Offices), known as the Husband and Wife Law Team, a Phoenix, Arizona personal injury law firm, became the southwest regional sponsor of the 2010-11 American Lawyer Academy (ALA) Viral Video Scholarship Contest.  The scholarship program is dedicated to the thousands of people who are needlessly injured or lose their lives each year due to the negligence of others.  The goal of the American Lawyer Academy, in conjunction with its regional partners, is to help reduce the number of collisions and help save lives with a positive viral message created by this contest.  High school and college students nationwide were encouraged to submit their videos promoting safe driving.  

“We received so many impressive entries from both high school and college students in Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma.  It was so difficult to choose our top 3 finalists that we had to open it up for public voting!”

“We are happy to announce that the regional winner, now in the pool for the first and second place national prizes of a $10,000 or $3,000 scholarship, is the entry entitled ‘There’s a time to drive, and a time to text,’ submitted by Dual Credit Computer Graphics Teacher Christi Stuebben on behalf of Nathan Vickery and the 8th grade class at First Baptist Academy in Universal City, Texas!”

The video promotes the message of safe driving habits through a touching story about a teen driver who makes the mistake of texting while driving, costing the life of a child.  
Distracted driving is a growing safety concern consisting of any activity that creates a visual, manual, or cognitive distraction from paying attention to the road.  In 2009, 20% of injury crashes across the country were caused by some form of distracted driving (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration).  The largest proportion of distracted driving accidents involves drivers under 20 years old (NHTSA).  Cell phone use while driving impairs a driver as much as having a blood alcohol concentration level of .08 (University of Utah).

The honorable mentions for the Southwest Region are Justin Caylen Castillo from Sandra Day O’Connor school in Texas for his video, “Drive Now. Talk Later,” and Joshua Welty from the University of Texas at San Antonio for his video, “The Designated Driver Musical.”  
The American Lawyer Academy Viral Video Scholarship Contest offers $25,000 in scholarships toward college tuition at a recognized academic institution.  The national winners of the grand prize of $10,000 and the 2nd place prize of $3,000 will be announced on June 1st.
