New Market Report Now Available: Ukraine Commercial Banking Report Q2 2011

May 18, 2011 - PRLog -- Banking: Weak Credit Conditions To Weigh On Performance  We believe that crisis risks to Ukraine's banking sector are firmly in the past. However banking sector  performance will be subdued over the medium term as weak consumption dynamics in the wider  economy weigh on credit growth. Going forward, Kiev's successful adherence to the IMF Stand-By  Arrangement will provide a key anchor for confidence in the banking system as it gradually returns to  health as economic growth accelerates in 2012.  Credit growth remains lacklustre in Ukraine, with total loans rising by just 1.8% year-on-year (y-o-y) in  November 2010. What is more, we note that much of the increase in lending has been almost entirely  driven by loans to government (rising by 59.3% y-o-y in the same month). Total loans to households, in  contrast, have continued to contract, declining by 12.6% during the same period, highlighting the tight  state of credit conditions and weak household demand for credit. While the National Bank of Ukraine has  indicated it will hold its key policy rate near historical lows in order to keep credit conditions as  accommodative as possible (see our online service, November 9 2010, 'Monetary Tightening Delayed  Until 2011'), we expect monetary policy makers to struggle to make a large impact on lending in 2011.  Poor asset quality will continue to constrain credit growth and until we see an improvement in this area,  we believe this will weigh on banking sector performance.
