As seniors we are prone to illness due to the weakening of the body’s natural defense mechanism which results in a number of medications to treat various health issues.
It is vital that seniors and their care givers educate themselves about the proper use of medications. Taking multiple prescription drugs at the same time can result in drug interactions causing serious problems and may even be life threatening! Don’t forget over the counter drugs, herbal remedies, and vitamins can also cause drug related problems.
Some tips to assist you:
•   Keep a  list of all of your medications and the pharmacy you use. Include vitamins and non-prescription medications you take. Don’t forget to update the list if your medications change.
•   Store medications where children can’t see or reach them. Do not leave them in direct sunlight-heat and humidity can affect the medications safe use. Keep medications in their original containers
•   Never take someone else’s medication
•   Read the label very time a dose is taken to make sure it is the right drug and instructions are being followed properly.
•   Be aware of possible drug-related problems or side effects that can occur-know when to seek medical attention if necessary.
•   Avoid particular foods, direct sun, or alcohol if instructed.
•   Keep your doctor and pharmacist informed of all medications you take, including vitamins, or herbal remedies.
