May 17, 2011 - PRLog -- A community is joining together to honor Detroit Police Department Sixth and Eighth Precinct officers, sergeants and a commander injured in the line of duty on Jan. 23, 2011. The Brightmoor Alliance, Brundidge Group McDonald’s, Business United with Officers and Youth (BUOY), the City of Detroit, Detroit Community High School, Juls Stationary Design, State Farm, and 2gether We Stand youth mentoring program are hosting “Tribute to Heroes” on Sat., May 21 at noon at Detroit Community High School located at 12675 Burt Road in Detroit.

“Tribute to Heroes” will feature a basketball game at Detroit Community High School between the Detroit Police Department and the Brundidge Group McDonald’s. Those attending the basketball game are being asked to make a minimum donation of $3 with all proceeds going to the construction of a monument to be erected in honor of the Sixth and Eighth Precinct officers.

“The command staff at the 6th and 8th Precincts are honored to pay tribute to all the men and women of the Detroit Police Department,” said Vicki Yost, Lieutenant, City of Detroit Police - Eighth Precinct. “We recognize the courageous actions of our members on January 23, 2011, and remember those who have given all.  We appreciate their professionalism, sacrifice and dedication to duty.”

The first responders from the Sixth and Eighth Precinct were injured by a gunman who repeatedly fired his shotgun inside the precinct. Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee Jr. has praised the precinct officers for their heroism and training which enabled them to survive this tragic incident.

"Detroit Community High School has a fourteen year history of being one of the safest schools in the city of Detroit,” said Milo Tilton, superintendent, Detroit Community Schools. “We know that we could not make this claim if it were not for the unwavering support we have received from the brave men and women of the Sixth and Eighth Precincts. We are privileged to host this event in their honor."

Prior to the basketball game beginning with a 1 p.m. tip off, Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee Jr. will make a presentation in tribute to the officers injured in the Jan. 23 incident.

"We are delighted that what started as a small basketball game between Tina Brundidge's McDonald's organization and the Detroit Police Department has turned into a community-wide event to support our men and women in blue,” said Darlene King, special events coordinator, Detroit Community High School.

Both basketball teams anticipate strong cheering sections as a result of the citywide support from area police precincts, local businesses and neighbors in the community.

Detroit Mayor Bing, Detroit Community Schools superintendent Milo Tilton, Detroit Community High School principal Aaron P. Williams, Jr., and local McDonald’s owner/operator Tina Brundidge each will make remarks prior to the halftime show.

“As a local business owner, I feel strongly about supporting the community in which I do business,” said Tina Brundidge, local McDonald’s owner/operator. “I am pleased to have my managers and employees join me in this fundraiser for our local Detroit Police Department Sixth and Eighth Precincts. We are looking forward to a great game.”

The halftime show will include a flag presentation by #808 Law Enforcement Explorers, followed by performances from the Police Athletic League’s Bronco Cheerleaders; the Detroit Community High School cheer and dance teams; and the lead singer of the Detroit Police Department’s Blue Pigs Band.

“Tribute to Heroes” coincides with National Police Week, May 15 – 21, 2011, which recognizes the essential role members of law enforcement serve in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of local citizens.
