May 18, 2011 - PRLog -- Many companies are failing to securely dispose of their old IT equipment, making them vulnerable to data exposure. Hard drives containing employee, customer and product information may not be cleansed and reformatted correctly such that sensitive data may still be recovered. In the wrong hands, the consequences are unthinkable.

International Case Study

Last year 10 students at the University Of British Columbia Graduate School Of Journalism and their professor, former 60 Minutes producer Peter Klein won an Emmy Award for an investigative news documentary that explores the health and environmental impacts of electronic waste.

The Outstanding Investigative Journalism award, one of the top news awards, was for the PBS Frontline/World documentary, ‘Ghana: Digital Dumping Ground’, traced the path of electronic waste around the globe to Ghana, China and India and exposed a number of public health, human rights and national security concerns. It aired on U.S primetime documentary series FRONTLINE/World last year and was the most popular video on the series’ website.

The students made headlines when they purchased discarded hard drives in Ghana for $40 that contained sensitive information about multimillion-dollar contracts between Northrop Grumman, one of the largest military contractors in the U.S, and the Pentagon, Air Marshall Service and Department of Homeland Security.

“The e-waste documentary is the kind of project that the vast majority of newsrooms couldn’t have done,” Klein says.

So your hard drives don’t end up in unimaginable hands and in direct response to customer need, Shredall is now offering a secure collection, shredding and recycling service. In addition to meeting the security needs of the customer, Shredall helps the customer meet their environmental and ethical needs by ensuring that their equipment is recycled. This is in line with Shredall’s commitment to its 100% recycling target for all non-contaminated customer waste and in keeping with our ISO 14001 accreditation.

If you require further information or guidance on this important issue, or if you wish to arrange a collection, please do not hesitate to contact Shredall Ltd on 0800 393 178 or sales@shredall.co.uk.

Shredall does not endorse the selling on of IT Equipment (or parts) for reuse or refurbishment by third parties. Shredding is, in our opinion, the most robust method of data destruction and therefore protection available to our customers.
