New Market Research Report: Turkey Commercial Banking Report Q2 2011

PRLog (Press Release) - May 17, 2011 - Monetary Tightening To Hurt Bank Profitability  The introduction of higher reserve requirement ratios on lira deposits is set to hurt banking sector  profitability in the near term, as Turkey's central bank seeks to tighten monetary policy. We believe that  further tightening measures are on the cards as the central bank simultaneously pursues a policy of  lower interest rates to tackle a widening current account deficit. However, over the medium term, we  maintain a positive outlook for the banking sector, as demand for new loans and financing of major  infrastructure projects will remain elevated.  A new strategy by Turkey's central bank will limit commercial banks' ability to extend new credit and  squeeze banks' profit margins in the near term. The Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT)  has adopted what it refers to as an 'ideal policy mix' to address a widening current account deficit  through cutting the key policy rate in December 2010, while at the same time continuing to raise  reserve requirements on banks (see our online service, December 17 2010, 'Monetary Policy Shift: Key  Implications'). The latter is intended to put the brakes on credit growth and soak up liquidity in the  banking system.  While earlier hikes to the minimum reserve requirement ratio on lira deposits -- initiated in September -  - have yet to have a major impact on credit growth, which remained at 35.2% year-on-year (y-o-y) in  September, the latest move by the CBRT shows that the bank is intent on tightening monetary  conditions. On December 16 the central bank lifted the reserve requirement ratio for lira deposits from  6.0% to 8.0%, in an effort to soak up as much as TRY7.6bn in liquidity from the system.
