Follow on Google News | The history of underfloor heatingUnderfloor heating (under floor heating) has been around for many years. Here’s a history of electric underfloor heating systems & underfloor heating installation.
By: Sarah Tron Though most people think that the Romans designed the first ever floor heating system, this is in fact untrue. The pioneers of the electric underfloor heating are actually the older civilisations that lived in and around Asia- such as China, Korea and Alaska; this has been confirmed and verified by archaeologists. However, in Asia underfloor heating systems were used to dry rather than to produce heat for warmth; these were known amongst the ancient civilisations as ‘baked floors’. The idea of these ‘baked floors’ was then used by ancient civilisations residing in Alaska, and updated. This type of underfloor heating installation was then used by the Romans who developed the hypocaust, which translated means heat from below. They created a void beneath the floors of their baths, where warm air was passed along to from cellars where the air was heated in furnaces. Meanwhile, over in Turkey, Korea and Afghanistan more sophisticated types of electric underfloor heating systems were being developed around 500AD-700AD. These were then replicated around Europe. These were made into different shapes, which some of today’s modern electric under floor heating systems are based upon. Once electricity was discovered by Benjamin Franklin in the 18th century, floor heating changed significantly once again. In the 1960’s underfloor electric heating was used for the first time; where electric cables were laid in concrete which were heated during the night- when the cost of electricity was at its lowest. This brought with it some problems, as the floors were often too hot to stand on in the morning and the rooms were too cold by the time the evening arrived. This type of system was also very costly to run. Advances in modern technology have meant that the latest systems, such as laminate floor heating and cheap underfloor heating are now much more cost effective to run, as well as being an extremely efficient way to heat any property. So today whether you choose to utilise water floor heating, or electric underfloor heating kits these systems are an affordable and effective choice of heating.
