New Market Research Report: Qatar Power Report Q2 2011

Recently published research from Business Monitor International, "Qatar Power Report Q2 2011", is now available at Fast Market Research

May 16, 2011 - PRLog -- In this report, BMI forecasts that Qatar will account for 2.56% of Middle East and Africa (MEA) regional power generation by 2015, with a broadly balanced market after system losses etc are taken into account. BMI's MEA power generation assumption for 2010 is 1,222 terawatt hours (TWh), representing an increase of 4.0% over the previous year (where markets were depressed by the economic slowdown). We are forecasting an increase in regional generation to 1,508TWh by 2015, representing a rise of 18.5% between 2011 and the end of the period in 2015.

MEA thermal power generation in 2010 is estimated by BMI to have been 1,140TWh, accounting for 93.3% of the total electricity supplied in the region. Our forecast for 2015 is 1,370TWh, implying 16.1% growth in 2011-2015 that reduces slightly the market share of thermal generation to 90.8% - thanks in part to environmental concerns that should be promoting renewables, hydro-electricity and nuclear generation. Qatar's thermal generation in 2010 will have been an estimated 23.7TWh, or 2.08% of the regional total. By 2015, the country is expected to account for 2.82% of thermal generation.

For Qatar, gas will have been the dominant fuel in 2010, accounting for an estimated 72% of primary energy demand (PED), followed by oil at 28%. Regional energy demand is forecast to reach 1,114mn tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) by 2015, representing 15.9% growth over the period since 2011. Qatar's estimated 2010 market share of 3.31% is set to rise to 4.26% by 2015.

Qatar is still ranked first ahead of the UAE in BMI's updated Power Business Environment Ratings, thanks largely to its market size and low level of energy import dependency, and in spite of its particularly low proportion of renewables use. The power sector is competitive, with good progress towards privatisation. The regulatory environment remains relatively unattractive. With a comfortable five-point lead, Qatar has the potential to keep the UAE at bay for the foreseeable future.

BMI now forecasts real GDP growth will average 9.95% a year in 2011-2015, with 2011 growth forecast at 17.20%. The population is expected to expand from 1.5mn to 1.6mn over the period. GDP per capita is forecast to rise by 29% during 2010-2015 and electricity consumption per capita is expected to increase by 31%. Power consumption is expected to increase from an estimated 19.4TWh in 2010 to 31.6TWh by the end of the forecast period, providing a broadly balanced market - assuming 10.4% average annual growth (2011-2015) in electricity generation.

Between 2011 and 2020, we are forecasting an increase in Qatari electricity generation of 90.7%, which is among the highest in the range for the MEA region. This equates to 37.7% in the 2015-2020 period, down from 38.5% in 2011-2015. PED growth is set to rise from 35.4% in 2011-2015 to 37.0%, representing 85.5% for the entire forecast period. Thermal power generation is forecast to rise by 91% between 2011 and 2020. More details of the longer-term BMI power forecasts can be found towards the end of this report.
