"Romania Commercial Banking Report Q2 2011" now available at Fast Market Research

PRLog (Press Release) - May 16, 2011 - Banking Sector Recovery To Be Slow  Our view that Romanian banking sector profitability will remain weak heading into 2011 on account of  the poor state of the wider economy remains unchanged, and we see few signs to suggest that a turning  point is on the cards. The economy is only just set to begin emerging from the second consecutive year of  negative real GDP growth. Combined with a weak labour market and ongoing fiscal tightening measures  by the government, we believe bank asset quality will remain a major drag on overall banking sector  performance. The non-performing loan (NPL) ratio continued to climb in Q310, according to National  Bank of Romania data, rising to 11.7% of total loans, up markedly from 10.2% in the previous quarter  and just 6.5% at the end of Q309 (see chart).    Doubtful loans as a percentage of total also continued to tick higher during the quarter, reaching 2.7% of  the aggregate bank loan portfolio, up from 2.2% in Q210 and 2.0% at the end of the first quarter.  Although the capital adequacy ratio of Romanian banks remains high (14.6% in Q310), the credit risk  ratio surged higher, from 5.3% in Q308, to 14.2% in Q309 and reaching 20.2% by Q310.  Not surprisingly, the Romanian banking sector's return on assets (ROA) ratio remained in negative  territory for a second consecutive quarter in Q310 at -0.2%, having been below 1.0% since Q109 (see  chart). Perhaps even more spectacularly, the return on equity (ROE) ratio swung sharply into negative  territory during this period, from 6.0% in Q110 to -1.6% in Q210 and -2.1% in Q310.
