May 14, 2011 - PRLog -- On November 10, 1775, the Continental Congress authorized the formation of two battalions of American Marines, thus establishing the legendary fighting force known today as the United States Marine Corps. For over 230 years, the Marines have proudly served in nearly every conflict in our nation’s history and continue to defend the freedom and values of the American people.

The obverse was modeled by Norman E. Nemeth based on Joe Rosenthal’s Pulitzer Prize winning photograph of the raising of the American flag on Iwo Jima during World War II. This enduring image was also the inspiration for the Marine Corps War Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia that is dedicated to all the Marines who have given their lives in defense of their country since 1775.

The reverse features the United States Marine Corps emblem which depicts an American eagle perched atop a globe and anchor. Inscribed below the emblem is the Marine Corp motto, “Semper Fidelis” (Always Faithful), which signifies the lifelong dedication and loyalty that each Marine has for Corps and Country.

The proof version of this coin was struck with special, highly polished dies and has an immediately recognizable mirror-like finish. Minted in 90% silver and graded MS70 and PR70 by ANACS, the Marine Corps 230th Anniversary Commemorative Silver Dollar Set comes packaged with an elegant wooden gift box. This 2 coin set is available on a strictly limited basis. Avoid disappointment and order yours today.
