The money raised will go towards supporting the building and equipping of a primary school in the town of Yei, Southern Sudan and is one way in which the company is demonstrating its social responsibility. Head of Training and Innovation at Pearcemayfield, John Edmonds says: “With every course place booked with us, we will buy a book for the school library.”
John is a founding trustee of Roots and this cause is close to his heart. He first visited the town in 2008 and has been back twice since, the last time in June last year, to develop plans to help improve education there.
85% of adults in Southern Sudan cannot read or write and less than 50% of children receive five years of primary education. The average class size is 127 pupils and the vast majority of schools have very few resources and no books for the children.
Pearcemayfield hopes this initiative will go some way to help improve the literacy and learning of the children in Yei. For more information on ‘Giving the Gift of Education’ or Roots, visit www.pearcemayfield.com or http://www.rootssudan.org
