May 12, 2011 - PRLog -- Two international competition winners have touched down in Australia on their trip around the world experience and are getting up close and personal with a national icon. Carielle Doe from New York and Michael Teoh from Malaysia, who won the Your Big Year competition, are adding conservation volunteering at Ayers Rock, Uluru to their list of experiences.

Your Big Year is a unique free competition designed to encourage global citizenship and social responsibility through enterprise. In 2010, Your Big Year attracted 44,489 entries from 168 countries, from which 24 finalists arrived in Liverpool, England to take part in the final stage of the competition during Global Entrepreneurship Week, held 13-21 November 2010.

Competition winners Carielle and Michael, along with runner up Lauren Cochrane from Canberra, have joined a Conservation Volunteers project at Uluru as part of their amazing round-the-world prize experience. The volunteers will be helping to restore the native vegetation to Uluru - Kata Tjuta National Park by removing exotic introduced weeds including Buffel Grass.

As part of this project, the team will be introduced to Uluru’s Aboriginal knowledge, giving them the opportunity to understand the cultural and environmental significance of this unique World Heritage listed location.

“In the short time we have been here we have come to understand the cultural and natural significance of this area to the Anangu Aboriginal people” said Michael Teoh.

“We are excited that young volunteers from all over the world can come to this place and volunteer their time to restore the natural landscape to its original condition”.

Being a global ambassador for this year, Michael is calling for young travellers visiting Australia to consider spending a week volunteering and contributing their ideas and strength towards improving the environment and using such an opportunity to learn the cultures of the aboriginal people. During his world trip, he hopes to inspire young people to volunteer for projects that bring about positive social impact to the communities.

“Being here is really magical that no mere words could describe. Ayers Rock, Uluru’s presence and our walk around Kata Tjuta have been really significant for me, as we were told of the local folklores and how our involvement as environmental volunteers would have a positive impact in returning its ecological landscape to its best shape. I felt fulfilled every day, working in the fields by permitted areas around Uluru and having to see how the work we do, like weeding and taking off the foreign grass would have helped to rejuvenate the native animal and plant species around – Allowing them to flourish across the lands once more. Nothing beats that magical feeling of satisfaction,” said Michael.

On their trip, they will meet World Leaders, innovators and inspirational entrepreneurs. During their adventure they will live in different communities, learn leadership skills and join volunteer projects – from teaching children in South America to conservation work in Asia and Australia.

Registration for Your Big Year 2011 is available online at http://www.yourbigyear.com – Australian applicants are welcome.
