Follow on Google News | Tow Truck Driver's Widow Helps Protection Bill Move ForwardThe Towing and Recovery Association of America, in conjunction with its ongoing effort to improve the image of towers and the towing industry to the general public
By: Jeffrey Godwin Speaking to the Senate's Judiciary Committee, Renee said "I am the widow of Allen Rose, the tow truck driver that was killed. I do believe in my heart that [his death] could have been prevented." Minutes later, the committee unanimously supported a bill that will forever be known as the Allen Rose Tow-Truck Safety Act (Senate Bill 260). Allen Rose, 35, stood little chance when he was ensnared in the tow cable that connected his truck to a car he was about to tow back in February. Colorado Springs Police estimated he was dragged behind that car for more than a mile. The story quickly made its way to Senate Majority Leader John Morse, who is now the Senate sponsor of the bill that would, in a variety of ways, seek to better protect tow truck drivers. For starters, it would criminalize the act of getting into a vehicle once a tow truck driver has placed a sticker on the driver's side door. It would also require drivers to yield the right of way to stationary tow trucks. Think of it in the same fashion as drivers might as they approach emergency vehicles on the side of the highway: Move over to the left lane. The bill now moves on to the State Senate floor.
