Students stage circle time

PRLog (Press Release) - May 20, 2011 - On the evening of Friday, May 13, parents and children alike gathered for a musical lesson on law and order in Princeton Montessori School's new performance space, the Crescendo Room.

A Day in the Life of a Circle documents a day in an elementary classroom.  As the lights come on, the children rush into the classroom, running here and there as their school day begins.  Bursting with excitement, the children gather in a circle for their morning meeting.  As their teacher leads them through the meeting, the children reflect on the importance of rules and how they provide order in all areas of life.

The musical’s theme coincides beautifully with what the children are actually learning in the classroom.  Elementary-age children have a keen sense of justice, and the concept of right and wrong is taking shape within them.  The children must deal with sticky social situations and seemingly-arbitrary and adult-constructed guidelines.  A Day in the Life of a Circle effectively sums up the trials and tribulations experienced by children in this age group.

The musical’s conclusion provides an appropriate metaphor for the children.  By following the rules of music, beautiful melodies and harmonies can blossom.  Likewise, by following the rules of friendship and school, students undergo the transformation from an egocentric toddler and young child, to an older child who is aware of the rest of the world.

Alan Bell wrote the original musical's script and lyrics.  Alex Mitnick, the school's music teacher, composed the music and directed the play.
