May 10, 2011 - PRLog -- After running his 53rd race and winning by 4 ½ lengths, B.B. Best was claimed and retired by racing owner Maggie Moss.  Son of “Yes It’s True” (Three Chimneys) and being his highest earner, B.B. has a lifetime earnings of $782,569.  B.B. Best started his career in Florida competing in high stakes races.   His accomplishments include winning the Wyn Dot Coma Stakes (2004), Florida Stallion In Reality Stakes (2004), Florida Stallion Dr. Fager Stakes (2004),  Ambehaving Stakes (2006), placing second in the Spend A Buck Handicap (2005) and the  Florida Derby (2005) and placing third in the Champali Stakes (2006) and the Radar Love Stakes (2006).  He has also competed with well know horses Lava Man and Laywer Ron.

After being contacted by a group of thoroughbred advocates, Maggi claimed B.B. Best  who was running in $5,000 claiming races at Mountaineer Race Trace in West Virginia.  A $5,000 claiming race at Mountaineer is considered the bottom of the barrel.  Horses like B.B. Best start their careers in high dollar races and as they get older, fall in the ranks and end up at the lower tracks in low claiming races.  At this level, they find themselves being claimed frequently and usually don’t have much of a future.  Look at Twisted Wit, (earnings of $944,699) who had 9 owners in a year and a half and after being retired is bound to a stall for 8 to 12 months because of injuries.  When this happens, there is no devotion or loyalty to these warriors.  Most either break down or end up at an auction being sold for slaughter.  Very few find retirement in a green pasture.  Younger thoroughbreds that can no longer run, very often, find themselves being donated to rescues for rehabilitation and placement.  These older athletes are usually dealing with older injuries and arthritis and are not as easy to place.  Most are only suitable for light flat work or pasture mates.  With the economy today, adopters seek horses that can “do it all” including jumping.

B.B.Best, who was born in Florida, is going home to be retired to Pure Thoughts Horse and Rescue in Loxahatchee, Florida.  Older thoroughbreds coming off the track don’t know any life except racing and need time and patience while learning how to be a horse again.  B.B. Best will receive that from Jennifer of Pure Thoughts.

B.B. Best and a track companion will be shipped to Florida soon.  Transportation funds are needed to do this.  If you can help, please donate through Pay Pal, could you please go on the website for Pure Thoughts at  http://www.purethoughtshorserescue.com/ottbdivision/index...  and click on their donation button to donate or go directly to their pay pal at  Jennifer@PureThoughtsHorseRescue.com .  Be sure to put a note in Pay Pal that it is for B.B. Best.  If you prefer to send a check by mail, could you please send it to the address below.  Again, please make a note on the bottom of the check stating that is for B.B. Best.
